About this tool

Text copied from PDFs, Word documents, OCR output and web pages often carries extra spacing: runs of spaces (including non-breaking spaces), indented or padded lines, tabs and empty lines. Pasted into a CMS, an email or a spreadsheet, that spacing breaks layouts and makes comparisons fail.

This tool removes it in one pass and shows how many characters were taken out, while leaving the words themselves untouched.

A text cleaner tidies the spacing of pasted text - repeated spaces, spaces at the start and end of lines, blank lines and tabs - and can straighten curly quotes, so the text is ready to paste into an editor, form or file.

Common Workflows

Clean text when removing formatting from text pasted from PDF documents into a CMS editor, stripping invisible characters from text exported from legacy systems, normalizing whitespace in data prepared for CSV or database import, cleaning up OCR output that contains mixed spacing and tab characters, removing trailing spaces from code files, fixing inconsistent indentation in pasted content, and preparing text from multiple sources for consistent formatting before publication.

  • Five switchable options: collapse repeated spaces, trim each line, remove blank lines, replace tabs with spaces, and straighten curly quotes.
  • Changes only spacing and, if you choose, quotes - words, punctuation and capital letters are never altered.
  • Runs in your browser - copy the cleaned text, or move it back into the editor for another pass.

FAQs

The most common question is whether cleaning changes the text itself. It doesn't - only spaces, tabs, blank lines and, if you turn it on, curly quotes are changed. The FAQs below explain each option and how to keep paragraphs apart.

What does each cleaning option do?

Collapse repeated spaces turns runs of spaces into one; Trim each line removes spaces at the start and end of lines; Remove blank lines deletes empty lines; Replace tabs turns tabs into spaces; Normalize smart quotes changes curly quotes to straight ones. The first four are on by default, smart quotes is off.

Does it change my words or spelling?

No. It only changes spacing, line breaks and - if you turn it on - curly quotes. Words, punctuation and capital letters are left exactly as they are.

Will my paragraphs stay separate?

Each line stays on its own line, but Remove blank lines also deletes the empty line between paragraphs. Turn that option off if you want to keep a blank line between paragraphs.

What does the removed-characters count show?

How many characters shorter the cleaned text is than what you pasted - mostly the extra spaces, tabs and blank lines that were taken out.
