About this tool

Blog posts that promise 5 minute reads but take 15 minutes damage reader trust. Presentation scripts that seem right when written are too long when spoken aloud.

This reading time calculator estimates both at fixed average rates - so bloggers can set honest reading-time labels, and speakers can check that a script fits the slot before rehearsing.

A reading time calculator estimates how long it takes to read a piece of text at an average adult reading speed - and separately estimates speaking time for presentations and scripts - helping writers, bloggers, and speakers calibrate content length.

Calculated Breakdown

Silent Reading: ~5 to 6 minutes | Spoken Presentation: ~8 to 9 minutes

Silent reading is significantly faster than vocalized speech because human comprehension during silent reading does not require physical articulation.

Common Mistakes

Problem

Assuming speaking speed matches reading speed

Solution

Adults silently read between 200 and 250 words per minute, but speak at 125 to 150 words per minute. Using reading time for a keynote presentation will leave you severely short on time.

Problem

Ignoring technical difficulty and typography

Solution

Dense academic or medical material with complex terminology takes longer to comprehend than conversational fiction, even at identical word counts.

Problem

Failing to account for pauses in scripts

Solution

Slide transitions, audience laughter, demonstrations, and dramatic pauses routinely add 20% to speaking duration.

Tips & Best Practices

Benchmark against your publication's audience

For technical developer documentation, calculate reading time at 180 wpm. For casual newsletters, 220 wpm is a reliable benchmark.

Display reading time on long articles

Showing an honest reading time indicator in article headers sets reader expectations and reduces bounce rates on comprehensive guides.

Limitations

Heuristic word count estimation

The calculation uses standard average WPM rates; it cannot measure an individual reader's personal reading speed, fluency, or subject familiarity.

Does not count code blocks or embedded media duration

Time spent reviewing code examples, diagrams, or watching embedded videos must be estimated manually.

FAQs

The most common question is which speed is used: 200 words per minute for silent reading and 130 for speaking aloud. The FAQs below cover very short texts and why your own reading time may differ.

What reading speed does it use?

200 words per minute for reading time and 130 words per minute for speaking time, for example when timing a talk or video script. A 1,000-word article reads in about 5 minutes and takes about 7.7 minutes to read aloud.

How are very short texts shown?

Anything under a minute is shown in seconds, rounded up, so a 50-word paragraph shows 15 sec of reading time instead of 0.3 min.

What else does it count?

Words, sentences and paragraphs. The Copy button copies all the figures as a short text summary.

Why might my actual reading time be different?

200 words per minute is an average for ordinary prose. Technical or unfamiliar text takes longer, and skimming is faster, so treat the figure as an estimate for planning.
