Which should you use?
The presets exist purely for convenience - a custom percentage produces results through the identical calculation, so use whichever entry method is faster for the rate you want.
The most common question is what tip percentage to leave. In the US, a commonly cited range is roughly 10% for basic service, 15–18% for standard service, 20% for great service, and 25% for exceptional service - though this varies by region, service type, and personal judgment. In many other countries, tipping is not standard at all, so check local customs before assuming a US-style percentage applies.
Enter the bill total and select a tip percentage. The tip is bill × percentage ÷ 100, the total is bill + tip, and with more than one person both are divided evenly - a $136 bill at 20% split 5 ways is a $27.20 tip, $163.20 in total, $32.64 each.
Find 10% by moving the decimal point one place left, then build from there: double it for 20%, and add half of it again for 15%. On a $47 bill, 10% is $4.70, so 20% is $9.40 and 15% is $4.70 + $2.35 = $7.05. The calculator gives the exact figure for any percentage.
Divide the tip by the bill and multiply by 100. A $9 tip on a $60 bill is 9 ÷ 60 × 100 = 15%. Use the bill amount before the tip - the same figure you would type into Bill Amount.
