About this tool

Splitting a bill accurately without making everyone wait while mental math happens is a small but real social friction. This calculator gets the correct per-person amount, including tip, instantly - no embarrassing recounts.

It does not ask about tax, so decide for yourself whether to enter your bill's pre-tax or post-tax total before calculating.

This tip calculator computes the tip amount and total from a bill amount and a tip percentage, then splits both evenly across any number of people - a fast at-the-table calculation with no tax field and no unequal-split mode.

How to Use Tip Calculator

Enter Bill Amount

Type the total bill before tip.

Choose Tip Rate

Decide Pre-Tax or Post-Tax Yourself

Since there is no tax field, enter whichever bill figure - pre-tax or post-tax - you want the tip calculated on.

Compare a Few Percentages Before Deciding

Switch between preset buttons to see how the tip and total change at different percentages before settling on one.

Best For

  • Calculates tip amount, total with tip, and an even per-person split from any bill amount and tip percentage.
  • Five preset tip buttons - 10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, and 25% - plus a custom percentage field for any other rate.
  • Splits the total evenly across the number of people you enter; there is no field for entering different amounts per person.

Examples

A $52.40 bill, 18% tip, dining alone

Input

Bill $52.40, Tip 18%, People 1

Result

Tip Amount $9.43, Total with Tip $61.83

With only 1 person, the per-person cards do not appear - only Tip Amount and Total with Tip are shown.

A $136.00 bill, 20% tip, split 5 ways

Input

Bill $136.00, Tip 20%, People 5

Result

Tip Amount $27.20, Total with Tip $163.20, Tip Per Person $5.44, Total Per Person $32.64

Common Mistakes

Problem

Expecting an uneven or itemized split

Solution

This calculator only splits the bill evenly across the Number of People field - there is no way to assign different amounts to people who ordered differently.

Problem

Not deciding pre-tax vs. post-tax before entering the bill

Solution

There is no tax field or toggle - the tool tips on whatever amount you type into Bill Amount, so decide up front whether that figure already includes tax.

Problem

Expecting a rounding option

Solution

Results are formatted to 2 decimal places for display only - there is no round-up-to-nearest-dollar or similar rounding mode.

Problem

Missing the per-person cards on a single-person bill

Solution

Tip Per Person and Total Per Person only appear when Number of People is greater than 1.

Tips & Best Practices

Decide pre-tax or post-tax before you start

Since the calculator has no tax field, be consistent about entering either the pre-tax or post-tax bill amount depending on your own convention.

Use Custom for percentages between the presets

If you want something like 12% or 22%, click Custom instead of rounding to the nearest preset button.

Double-check the people count for uneven groups

The Number of People field rounds to the nearest whole number, so entering a fraction like 2.5 will not produce a partial split.

Compare presets side by side before deciding

Click through the 10-25% presets to see how the total changes before settling on what to leave.

Limitations

Even split only

The tool divides the bill and tip equally across the number of people entered - it has no itemized or unequal per-person split mode.

No tax handling

There is no tax field or pre-tax/post-tax toggle - the tip is calculated on exactly the bill amount you enter, with no adjustment for sales tax.

No rounding mode

Results are shown to 2 decimal places for display only - there is no option to round the total or per-person amounts up or down.

No currency selector

Results are displayed with a fixed $ symbol - there is no dropdown to switch to another currency.

No saved history

Each calculation is a one-time result on the page - nothing is saved between visits or across bills.

Comparisons

Preset Tip vs. Custom Tip

Both calculate the same way - only how you enter the percentage differs.

Which should you use?

The presets exist purely for convenience - a custom percentage produces results through the identical calculation, so use whichever entry method is faster for the rate you want.

FAQs

The most common question is what tip percentage to leave. In the US, a commonly cited range is roughly 10% for basic service, 15–18% for standard service, 20% for great service, and 25% for exceptional service - though this varies by region, service type, and personal judgment. In many other countries, tipping is not standard at all, so check local customs before assuming a US-style percentage applies.

How does the tip calculator work?

Enter the bill total and select a tip percentage. The tool calculates the tip amount, total with tip, and the per-person share if you split the bill.
